Annecy connected to the fiber optic prepares for the 5G ?
Test of a relay antenna on the roof of a bus shelter in Annecy
Annecy offers its population and businesses access to high-speed Internet thanks to fiber optics. From 2021, 5G will be deployed for mobile telephony. We offer you an overview of these technological challenges.
Deployment of the fiber on the agglomeration of Annecy
The inhabitants of Annecy are lucky because their city had been selected to be one of the first in France to be equipped with fiber optics.
Started in 2012, the installation of this new technology in Annecy is now effective on almost the entire city. The investments were made by the operator Orange. But all Internet service providers, Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom, Free offer a monthly subscription.
All you have to do is subscribe to an offer and request the connection of your home to the network.
State of the art: in the agglomeration of Paris;Annecy, the cities of;Annecy-le-Vieux, Cran-Gevrier, Seynod are globally connected to this day.
If you live on Meythet, Poisy, Chavanod, Argonay, Saint-Martin-Bellevue, Epagny-Metz-Tessy, Pringy and Quintal, the connection is partial but will be completed by 2022.
For the municipalities further away from the Annecy metropolitan area, the SYANE (Syndicat des énergies et de l’aménagement numérique de la Haute-Savoie) which is a public body is building a fiber optic network. It will allow villages like Sévrier, Villaz and Saint Jorioz to be connected. You can consult our file for know how to connect to the fiber in the region of Annecy.
The 5G on Annecy in 2021 ?
In 2017, the city of Annecy had been selected by the Agence Nationale des Fréquences to proceed with tests of 5G relay antennas. These small antennas in the form of cylinder had been installed on bus shelters. The results were satisfactory and the flow was largely improved.
On the side of our Swiss neighbors, the 5G network was quickly deployed in 2019, perhaps too quickly, as many political oppositions emerged last February. The impact on health would not have been sufficiently studied. Swiss operators are therefore forced to slow down the development of the 5G mobile network.
Even closer to Annecy, in the commune of Menthon-Saint-Bernard on the shores of Lake Annecy, a 25-meter high 5G antenna was to be built by Free in a field. Local residents, supported by the Association Lac Annecy Environnement, first asked the mayor not to grant the building permit. The association has since filed an appeal with the Administrative Court of Grenoble to cancel the administrative authorization.
As a reminder, only the most recent smartphones are compatible with 5G technology. At the end of the year, the French government must allocate the 5G frequencies to national operators. It will then be necessary to wait for the city of Annecy to be equipped with many relays of last generation.
So we believe that 5G in Annecy will not be a reality before 2022.
Beyond the use by individuals, this technology up to 10 times faster than 4G is highly anticipated by industry: autonomous cars, smart cities, connected objects.
